KAT EHF, based in Iceland, is the first company in the country to invest in a combined pallet sorting and repair line from Pallet Sorting Systems (PSS).
This modular installation combines automated sorting and ergonomic repair in a single workflow, designed for one sorting operator and two pallet repairers. The entire pallet process — from inspection to reuse — is now streamlined and highly efficient.
The line consists of a sorting station with eight stackers and a repair section with two ergonomic workstations.
The sorting operator inspects each pallet and directs it to the correct stacker at the push of a button.
The system recognises seven pallet types plus a dedicated stream for damaged pallets.
Damaged pallets are automatically separated and moved via a side feeder to the repair workstations.
Each workstation includes a lifting table at working height, allowing operators to repair pallets without heavy lifting or walking.
After repair, pallets are re-introduced into the system and automatically stacked with the sorted pallets.
The line handles Euro pallets, Industrial pallets and GMA pallets, frequently used in Icelandic harbour logistics.
The PSS sorting and repair line is designed for maximum ergonomics, efficiency and safety:
High sorting capacity: one operator can sort up to 500 pallets per hour.
No lifting or walking: repairers work at fixed stations with automatic infeed and outfeed.
30% higher repair output thanks to less physical strain and shorter cycle times.
Safe and clear layout with defined work zones and emergency stops.
Smooth cooperation between sorter and repairers – continuous workflow without interruptions.
The investment in the PSS line delivers measurable business results for KAT EHF:
Up to 500 pallets per hour processed by a single operator.
50% fewer forklift movements, lowering internal transport costs.
Consistent pallet sorting across seven categories plus one defect stream.
Higher quality and uniform output, as repaired pallets re-enter the sorting flow directly.
Lower operational costs through reduced handling and downtime.
Improved productivity per employee through ergonomic automation.
Safe, organised workspace with minimal forklift traffic.
Full monitoring via PSS SCADA, including reports on working hours, sorting results and repaired pallets per employee.
Modular, future-ready design that can be expanded with the Robotic Pallet Saw System
The system is equipped with the PSS SCADA platform, generating daily CSV reports on:
processed and repaired pallet counts,
operator working hours,
sorting statistics and totals.
All data are accessible through the PSS App, allowing KAT EHF to monitor productivity and maintenance in real time.
With this investment, KAT EHF achieves:
Faster and more consistent pallet handling.
30% higher repair output per worker.
50% fewer forklift movements.
Consistent sorting quality and a safer workplace.
The installation demonstrates how automation and ergonomics go hand in hand — setting a new standard for pallet handling in Icelandic harbour logistics.
